I have just arrived from San Diego, where the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ASCRS) took place. Even though having the 8th biggest population in the United States, it is a very quiet city, with no traffic. The Convention Center is located in the touristic and financial center of the city, really close to hundreds of hotels. Moreover, the excellent airport is just 10 minutes by cab from that area.
On Friday, March 25th, I joined a Pre-Conference called Glaucoma-Day. It is specific for cataract surgeons to diagnose and treat Glaucoma at the same time of the cataract surgery. The news in this subject was that the glaucoma implants are now in an advanced phase of research. The implants have shown to be very safe until now, and will be able, at first, to control the intraocular pressure.
On March 26th and 27th I participate as a lecturer of two themes. The first one, “Phaco in Guttata Patients: Modulating Without Changing the Surgical Technique”, presented solutions while operating cataract patients with Distrofia de Fuchs (Cornea Guttata), showing the results in 37 eyes of 25 patients that have this disease.
The second theme was “Huge Cross: A Surgical Technique for Hard Cataracts”, which demonstrated a specific surgical technic for dense cataracts, called “Huge Cross”, showing the results of 25 eyes of 18 patients.
On March 28th , I was the only ophthalmologist from Rio de Janeiro to participate in a training to qualify surgeons to implant the acommodative intraocular lens of double optic called “Synchrony”. The results with this lens are excellent, and it will be able to give multifocallity to patients. The launching in Brazil will be in the second semester.
Besides, other news were the beginning of cataract surgery filming in 3D, which gives us better depth focus, and the expected anterior chamber intraocular lens launching, called “Cachet”, having the function to correct high myopic patients.
Other interesting thing, nowadays, is the possibility to access the ASCRS site, where we can find videos and lectures to always be updated and be able to offer what is best in the world-cross ophthalmologic, especially in the cataract surgery, which we can say is the most succeed surgery in the Modern Medicine History.
Sincerely,
Rogério Horta
