Founded in 1986, the Dr. Rogério Horta Eye Institute aims to offer its patients the most modern and efficient services in existence in the field of ophthalmology.
Glaucoma is a slowly developing chronic illness that can lead to blindness. It is a group of eye diseases associated with increased pressure in the eyeball, leading to an optic neuropathy causing alterations in the vision field. It is an illness that increases as the population ages. Damage is irreversible. It is progressive and relentless. That is why it is so important to detect the problem as early as possible so that treatment can be started with as little damage to vision as possible.
Glaucoma can affect 1% to 3% of the population and its occurrence by age group is as follows:
-7% occur in individuals over 55 years old;
-44% occur in individuals between 55 and 74 years old;
-49% occur in individuals over 74 years old.
Specific Complementary eye examinations help to diagnose glaucoma and to find better treatment procedures. To this end, we have the latest state-of the art equipment such as:
OCT (optical coherence tomography) allowing detailed evaluation of the optic nerve, as well as Digital Retinograph, Ultrasonic Pachymeter, Corneal Topographer, Yag Laser, Countor Tonometer, and many others; these, allied to the experience and qualifications of the Institute’s medical team will indicate the best treatment procedure to be taken.
